Gisselle Legere
Gisselle Legere (she/her) is a Cuban-American writer who grew up among the exile community in Miami.
When she lost most of her hearing to a childhood vaccine reaction, her pediatrician advised her parents against teaching her sign language in favor of oralism and a mainstream education. Gisselle learned to navigate the hearing world by developing keen observational skills, which contributed to her accomplishments as a scientist and later as a writer.
Gisselle has written for multiple network and streaming shows, most recently on NBC’s New Amsterdam, where her episode, “Give Me a Sign,” shone a light on some of the language deprivation issues that denying deaf children sign language can cause.
